The spores contained in structures called "sori" are the form of reproduction for ferns. Sometimes they are on the underside of leaves (pinnae) sometimes they are on a separate stucture (fertile frond)as in the Cinnamon fern. The pattern of distribution and location of the sori are characteristic of each species as in this picture of the Virginia Chain fern. I found this one at the Turkey Trail. BTNP
