DSC02994 Liatris pycnostachya with Swallowtail
Many plants seemed to bloom early or otherwise off schedule this year. Warmer weather and last year's drought probably influenced bloom schedules. But our Kansas gayfeather (L. pycnostachya) is right on schedule. On July 28, it was just barely starting to bloom. By the end of the first week in August, it should be hitting full stride. This large black-colored swallowtail has faint stripes on the ventral side of her wings. This gives her away as the melanistic form of the eastern tiger swallowtail. She probably has sisters from the same brood that are bright yellow with black stripes.

January 11th 9:00 am - Noon NEW TIME: 1PM to 4PM
We will be clearing near the boardwalks using weed-eaters to prepare for the prescribed burn. Bring your cordless weed-eater and safety equipment. We will also be doing some raking. Bring a garden rake. We will provide water and snacks.
